Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Everything you need to know about getting your pitch deck investor-ready

What do frontier tech investors look for?

Frontier tech investors evaluate: scientific or engineering breakthrough (published research, patents), team credentials and domain expertise, IP defensibility, commercialization pathway (beachhead market), and realistic timeline from lab to product. They accept longer horizons but want clear milestones.

How do I explain complex technology to investors?

Use the "grandmother test": explain what your technology does (not how) in one sentence. Then show why it matters: what becomes possible that wasn't before? Use analogies, demos, and visual comparisons. Save deep technical details for the appendix.

What is the typical funding path for deep tech?

Deep tech often follows: grants/SBIR (validate science) → pre-seed/angel (prototype) → seed (first customers/pilots) → Series A (scale). Many deep tech startups also use non-dilutive funding (DOE, NSF, DARPA) to extend runway between equity rounds.

How do I show a market for something that doesn't exist yet?

Use market analogies: what existing market does your technology displace or expand? Show the "10x better" moment — when frontier tech becomes 10x cheaper/faster/better than current solutions, adoption follows. Reference adjacent technology adoption curves.

Do I need a PhD to raise for a frontier tech startup?

Strong academic credentials help but aren't mandatory. What matters is demonstrable domain expertise and the ability to attract talent. Many funded frontier tech startups have founding teams that combine deep technical knowledge with business/operational experience.
