Pre-seed investors prioritize: team strength and relevant experience, problem clarity and market insight, unique approach or technology angle, early customer discovery evidence, and a realistic $50K-500K ask. They know you don't have revenue — they want to see you understand the problem deeply.
Pre-seed rounds typically range from $100K to $1M, with most at $250-500K. Raise enough for 12-18 months of runway to hit clear milestones (MVP launch, first customers, key hires). Over-raising at pre-seed can set valuations too high for a seed round.
Pre-seed valuations typically range $2-5M for first-time founders, $5-8M for repeat founders. Many use uncapped SAFEs with MFN clauses. The key is finding a valuation where you can show meaningful progress by the next round to justify a step-up.
Traditional traction (revenue, users) isn't expected at pre-seed. But you need evidence of progress: customer interviews (50+), LOIs, waitlist signups, prototype demos, or pilot commitments. Showing customer discovery rigor is more important than vanity metrics.
Pre-seed ($100K-1M) is about validating the idea and building an MVP. Seed ($500K-3M) is about achieving product-market fit with a working product and early customers. The line is blurring, but generally: pre-seed = build, seed = grow.
